If you have diabetes it is important to look after yourself. You should try to eat healthier foods that are low in sugar, salt and fat but high in fibre. You should take regular exercise; training is perfect for leading a healthy life. Walking and swimming are great ways to use. You don’t have to go to the gym just pottering in the garden, doing some cleaning, or putting some music on and dancing around the house is enough. Exercising if you have diabetes is good because it helps insulin work better to lower blood sugar, exercising keeps your weight down and is good for your heart and lungs. You should try to use at least 3 times a week for 30-45 minutes each time. Speak to your GP before doing certain exercises to check it is safe for you to do so.

At least once a year you should get your blood glucose levels measured and have your blood pressure measured and recorded.

Check your blood sugar every day you need to know how you are taking care of your diabetes. If your blood has too much or too little, your GP may need to change your eating, exercising or medicine plan.

 

 

 

You should have two tests a year for your kidneys one urine to check for protein and the other a blood test to check kidney function.

If you are a smoker, it is important to get advice and support to help you quit. Having diabetes already increases your risk of having heart disease and stroke, by smoking this increases it even further.quit smoking.jpg

If you have diabetes it is so important to have your feet checked. The skin, circulation and nerve supply should be verified annually by a specialist podiatrist. You should be made aware if you are at risk of foot problems, therefore you may need regular treatments.
